Sympathy, Knowledge and Poise seem to be the three ingredients that are most needed in forming gentle man. I place these elements depending on their value. No man is great, with no Sympathy plus, and human greatness can be safely gauged by their sympathies. Sympathy and imagination are twin sisters. Your heart must go out to all people, big, small, rich, poor, learned, unlearned, good, bad, wise and foolish it must be one with them all, otherwise you can not understand. Sympathy! is the touchstone for each secret key to all knowledge, open sesame of all hearts. Put yourself in other people and then you'll know why he thinks certain things and not individual acts. Put yourself in his place and your blame will dissolve in mercy, and your tears will wipe his record of misdeeds. Saviors of the world were simply people with great sympathy. But Knowledge must go with sympathy, otherwise it will become sentimental emotions and pity may be wasted on a poodle instead of a child on a f
ield-mouse instead of a human soul. Knowledge in use is wisdom, and wisdom implies a sense of values than to know a little one thing, a valuable fact from a trivial one. Tragedy and comedy are simply questions of value: a little misfit in life makes us laugh, a great tragedy is the reason for the expression of pain. Poise is the strength of body and mind power to control your Sympathy and knowledge. If you do not have control over the emotions that drive them and sit in the gutter. Sympathy must not run riot, or is valueless and tokens weakness instead of strength. In every hospital for nervous diseases are many cases of this loss of control. The individual has Sympathy but not Poise, and therefore his life is worthless to himself and the world. He symbols inefficiency and not helpfulness. Poise reveals itself more voice than it does in words more thought than action, more atmosphere than in conscious life. It is a spiritual quality, and is felt more than seen. It is a matte
r of body size or body attitude, no clothes, no personal beauty: it is an inner state of being and knowing your cause is just. And so you see that is a great and profound subject after all, most of its ramifications, limitless in extent, implying the entire science of right living. I once met a man who was deformed in body and little more than a dwarf, but who had such Spiritual Gravity Poise, so as to enter a room where it was, was to feel his presence and recognize his superiority. To allow sympathy to waste on unworthy objects is to deplete his life forces. To save is part of wisdom, and backup is a necessary element in all good literature, and everything else. Poise being the control of our sympathy and knowledge, requires the possession of these attributes, without the need of sympathy and knowledge have nothing to control but your physical body. Poise To practice as a mere gymnastic exercise, or study in the label must be self-conscious, stiff, preposterous and ridicul
ous. Those who cut tricks such fantastic sky high before it makes the angels weep, are men void of empathy and knowledge trying to cultivate Poise. Their science is a simple matter of what to do with arms and legs. Poise is a question of meat inspection spirit, attitude control heart. Get close to nature knowledge of wine. That man is the largest serving the best of its kind. Sympathy and Knowledge are for use in a purchase that you can give out, I gather that you can give. And as God has given you the sublime blessings of sympathy and knowledge, there will come to you wish to reveal your gratitude by offering them again for the wise man is aware that we retain spiritual qualities only as we give them . Let your light shine. To him that hath shall be given. The exercise of wisdom brings wisdom and the knowledge of past human infinitesimal amount compared with the Infinite, and the smallness of human sympathy in comparison with which our source is absorbed, will evolve an abn
egation and a humility that will lend a perfect Poise . Gentleman is a man with perfect Sympathy, Knowledge and Poise.
